Ta Prohm is a marvellous temple
left predominantly as it was found, in dense jungle.
Due to the decision to leave the
temple as much as it was found, it has now become
one of the most popular temples to visit. The
dramatic sight of trees growing out of the temple
ruins are world famous and used as the backdrop of
Lara Croft’s Tombraider.
Ta Prohm was constructed during the 12th and 13th
century and was built in the same style as Bayon by
king Jayavarman VII. It is located approximately 1
km east of Angkor Thom and borders the Eastern Baray
on the south end.
Ta Prohm served as a monastery
and university during the mighty Khmer Empire, but
was soon abandoned after the Khmer Empire fell. It
is said that on the peak of the Khmer Empire, more
than 12.500 people lived in Ta Prohm and more than
80.000 people lived outside the city walls. |
