Basreliefs at Banteay Srei Temple

In size, Banteay Srei may not look impressive. It’s the detailed and well-preserved stone carvings that make this temple an impressive sight. The pink, sandstone wall is fully decorated with three dimensional carvings.

The stone carvings are considered to be among the most impressive in the world. Inscriptions indicate that the temple was continuously occupied, which explains the incredible preservations of Banteay Srei. Banteay Srei is a Hindu temple and is dedicated to the God Shiva. Interesting fact is that this is the only temple in the Angkor complex that was not built for a king but by a counsellor of king Rajendravarman II.

Located 32 km from Siem Reap and 25 km from Angkor Wat, Banteay Srei is accessible by motorbike, tuktuk or taxi. It takes proximally 1 hour to reach the temple and the road is in fair condition. Prices to reach the temple vary from US$8 by motorbike to US$20 by taxi. A typical daytrip includes Kbal Spean and Banteay Samre.
