Phnom Kulen is considered to be the most
sacred mountain in Cambodia and is situated about 40 km
outside of Siem Reap. It was on this mountain that king
Yasovarman II proclaimed Cambodia’s independence in the
early 9th century.
Phnom Kulen is a string of mountains
rising from the flat countryside that surrounds Siem
Reap. It is a popular daytrip for many Cambodians,
especially on Sunday. Not only the religious
significance of the mountain, also the natural beauty
with its waterfalls and picnic grounds make it an
interesting place to relax for a day.
There are a couple of small temples to
be found on Phnom Kulen. On the summit of the mountain
you can find a small Wat in which you will find a large
reclining Buddha. The other highlight of Phnom Kulen is
the view from the nearly 500 m high peak. The views of
the surrounding countryside are incredible, especially
just after the wet season has ended when the forest is
bright green.
Phnom Kulen is easily accessible by motorbike or car
over the same road that leads up to Banteay Srei.
Tuktuks are available but charge a very high price
because of its distance from Siem Reap. Not many
foreigners visit the place because of its high entrance
fee, US$20 and for Khmers it is free. During weekdays it
is incredibly serene in the area what gives you the
opportunity to really relax and appreciate nature.
